4 Tips To Reduce the Stress of a Job Search

If job searching makes you more anxious than excited, you’re not alone. Looking for a new opportunity brings a lot of pressure and isn’t easy for anyone. In fact, this article claims there are roughly 1 million more job openings currently than there are people looking for work. However, with the right tools and tips, you can effectively manage your stress and even learn to appreciate the search process.

Tip #1: Take time to target

When you decide it’s time to take the next step in your career, it’s important to put a plan in place that will serve as a foundation for your search. Determine your ideal position and be intentional with your search by becoming more targeted with the types of roles you’re applying for.

The landscape of these uncertain economic times may prolong the length of your job search, but don’t let that steer you away from your goal. Applying for jobs you don’t actually want will not only waste your time but also the hiring manager’s time on the other end of the process. Interview practice can’t hurt, but be mindful of where you want to exert your energy. The right opportunity will come along if you stay on target.

Tip #2: Practice empathy

Always remember that you aren’t going through this process alone. Your resume could be one of one hundred resumes a company receives on any given day. That’s not to say you won’t be discouraged when applying for a role you really want. Realize, it’s natural to feel discouraged and try to remain patient and trust the process.

The company is hiring because they need someone like you. And as mentioned above, the timeframe for hiring and onboarding a new employee may take longer than usual. Know that the hiring managers are doing their best to find the right fit for their organization. It wouldn’t hurt to acknowledge their hard work and efforts when applying or following up after an interview.

Tip #3: Know when to hold ‘em and when to fold ‘em

You know that gut feeling you get when something doesn’t seem right? Listen to it. Not every opportunity is going to be the right fit for you, and holding on tight just because you’re in dire need of a job is only going to become more overwhelming.

Simply knowing when to withdraw from an opportunity alone can go a long way when eliminating stress and anxiety from your search. Refer to tip #1 if you ever find yourself pushing for a role that doesn’t suit you. Good things take time.

Tip #4: Find help!

If your job search has done more harm than good to your mental health, it might be time to seek assistance from an experienced recruiter. Recruiters are great for pairing you with jobs that are within your target market and on track with your desired career path. Work with an experienced recruiter who understands your skill set, industry, and career goals. You’ll wish you had taken the leap sooner.

Don’t wait until you’re ready to begin your search. It’s always great to be in tune with the market before you are actively looking. Simply having a long-term relationship with the right recruiter will go a long way towards reducing your stress levels.
